YBCA is requesting proposals for a three-month artist residency that will take place from April 1 to June 30, 2014.
Proposals are being sought from artists whose work engages with social
and public practice in any or all disciplines: visual arts, performance,
theater, dance, film/video and new media.
YBCA’s guiding question for offering this residency is: Given
the significant economic changes to the Bay Area, how do artists
sustain themselves and maintain a flourishing, vibrant and highly
diverse arts community? YBCA wants to investigate how artists are
responding to an economic climate that pushes communities out of the Bay
Area, rather than seeking art that directly responds to this question.
The
YBCA Artist in Residence will award an emerging/mid-career artist whose
work foregrounds social and public practice a $10,000 monetary award
and opportunities to create meaningful programs and projects that look
beyond the traditional exhibition context to engage with Bay Area
communities. This three-month residency in partnership with Art Practical
aims to support local artists through substantial financial support,
critical engagement with their practice, and the career enhancement that
institutional alliances can create.
YBCA’s Artist in Residence Key Objectives:
--
Provide critical financial support for an artist or arts collective's
project that situates itself in dialogue with diverse groups and
sustains a creative life in the Bay Area.
--
Further activate critical discourse and debate about social and public
practice works and the role of artists engaged in work that activates
sites and communities.
YBCA Artist in Residence Conceptual Framework:
YBCA
becomes a catalyst for creative endeavor through this residency
program. The residency specifically seeks to support artists that
explore ideas through audience and public engagement, which is an
essential component of YBCA’s mission. Through the award, YBCA wants
establish itself as directly investing in the artistic landscape of this
region. Social and public practices are also proving to be a powerful
tool for community engagement—a way of connecting people to each other
through both interactive artistic content and physical spaces.
Artists
and art collectives in the San Francisco Bay Area create art works that
foreground community engagement and drive audience participation, while
also challengeing existing social structures within the urban context.
Artists are working to find creative solutions to social issues and
alternative ways to raise political awareness through their arts
practices using diverse strategies.
Instead
of asking the selected artist to produce a new body of work for an
exhibition, the residency encourages the selected artist to explore new
ways of interacting with art audiences and the larger public. Therefore,
applicants are asked to propose offsite projects to conceive of and
situate their audience beyond the institution’s walls.
YBCA Artist in Residence Award:
The
selected artist will receive a $10,000 cash award, professional support
and marketing, institutional support, and access to a broader audience
for their work.
In addition, through YBCA’s partnership with Art Practical, the selected artist will also receive:
-- a feature-length profile in the magazine that crafts an intimate look at the artist’s workspace, practice and vision.
-- a portfolio of the artist’s work presented as part of the “Fan Mail” series on Art Practical’s partner site Daily Serving.
--
a public program developed in conjunction with the artist that could
take the form of a podcast interview, an artist’s talk, a roundtable
discussion, a performance/film screening, or other program intended to
engage an audience around a topic relevant to the artist’s practice.
-- editorial review of the selected artist’s CV, website and artist statement.

All application materials are due via ybca.org/artist-residency on Thursday, March 14, 2014 by 5 p.m. Late submissions will be disqualified.
